The Opportunity:

This position is a paid, part-time (10-20 hours/week) position sited in State College, PA. This is NOT a remote work opportunity. The Data Analyst Intern is expected to fully engage in routine, on-site work and collaboration with the team located at Innovation Park in State College.

  • This internship is designed to be a quality learning experience for the best, brightest, and most ambitious undergraduate (junior/senior) and graduate students in our area whose academic pursuits include achieving a B.S. degree in Math, Applied Sciences, Data Science, Engineering, or equivalent.


  • This Internship is offered in entrepreneurial setting that offers unique opportunities to integrate, expand, refine, and synthesize knowledge from diverse disciplines, courses, and areas of experience. It provides circumstances where successful Interns can apply higher-order thinking skills (critical thinking, observation, recording, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, complex problem solving, etc.) to “real world” work situations while acquiring and refining skills in leadership, teamwork and personal accountability.

The position will have two defined levels of contribution: Data Analyst Intern Level I and Level II.   Both levels will comprise many of the duties outlined below with the Level II analyst expected to engage more independently and at a higher level of effectiveness. Rate of pay is commensurate with education and experience.

Atoptix, LLC (doing business as Croptix), headquartered in State College, PA, provides services to the agriculture industry for crop disease detection. The services leverage advanced analytics coupled with field deployable sensor technology to equip farmers with the tools to diagnose crop disease early and take effective action to reduce losses due to disease. The Croptix platform is available for citrus growers seeking to identify and manage the devastating citrus greening disease.

Croptix is looking to immediately hire several exceptional  Data Analyst Interns who are capable of adding even more horsepower to our development, performance, validation, and production systems and processes, allowing Croptix to deliver new tools our farmers so they can detect and mitigate crop loss before it’s too late.

The qualifications listed below give a high-level overview of the job duties and the job requirements. However, we recognize that even the strongest candidates for the job might not have all of these skills on Day 1, and that’s okay!  This is a work experience that is intended to enrich and compliment the educational experiences of our student workers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Working on independent projects as part of our Analytics team.

  • Developing tools to help us process data more efficiently.

  • Building Machine Learning models to help improve our disease-classifying algorithms.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Currently a student (undergraduate or graduate) in good standing with focus on B.S. degree in Math, Applied Sciences, Data Science, Engineering, or equivalent

  • Clear communication skills: our deliverables come in the form of PDF reports, slide decks, wiki pages, Jupyter notebooks, conference posters, and conversations.

  • Python programming experience (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn)

  • Experience using some or all of the following machine learning algorithms: logistic regression, random forest, XGBoost, principal components analysis, linear discriminant analysis.

  • Familiarity with Jupyter, QGIS3, GitHub, Slack, G Suite (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive)

  • If hired, must adhere to all company policies and procedures and other prescribed best practices/industry standards.

Preferred Additional Experience:

  • Previous work experience as a Data Analyst

  • Familiarity with MySQL

  • Experience building Python packages

  • Experience working with spectral data and/or signal processing

  • Experience designing experiments

  • Knowledge of statistics fundamentals: (generalized) linear models, mixed models, outlier detection
